    Hello,

I am confused in regards to the child theme and normal theme.

What is the child theme used for?
    Is it needed?
Do I choose the child theme as the main theme and activate that versus activating the actual theme?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello, @TFS,

A child theme in WordPress is a sub-theme that inherits all the functionality, features, and style of its parent theme. Child themes are a safe way to modify a WordPress theme without actually making any changes to the parent theme’s files.

To ensure you’re designing for the user experience, you might need to create a child theme. A child theme allows you to modify the appearance of your WordPress website without editing your theme files directly.

No need to choose the child theme as the main/parent theme. They are not always required. Remember, they are only required if need to modify theme code and/or files.

Changes in the parent theme will be lost after the update, so add your custom code in the style.css and function.php file of the child theme. You can read furthermore here: https://www.8theme.com/documentation/docs/child-theme/

    Hello Awais,

    Thanks for the details.

I personally wont be editing any code or anything of that nature.
My main purpose to get themes is to download them and make normal changes to them such as the logo, pages, products, header, footers and things like that. Nothing in terms of code or anything like that.

I may also use the Custom CSS tab found in the appearance section of the backend part of WordPress.

But nothing like editing the theme files or code.

In this case, do I need the child theme or can I delete that and just keep the parent theme?
