I would like to stage a build as subdomain of a different site than the ultimate site.

I would like to stage a complete new build of an existing site, but want to host the staging as a subdomain on a different site. Once the staging site is ready, I will be migrating it to the correct site.
Is this possible with the licensing?
How should I proceed?
