What are node_modules and grunt and do they need to be uploaded with my theme?

Are the grunt files inside the node_modules folder needed for my theme to work properly? If so what do they do? If not why are they included in the installable file?

Perfect, thanks, I was able to upload the theme and unzip it. All my problems have been fixed. I noticed the node_modules folder was missing… removing that seemed to be the fix?
